Red and Blue by Gerrit Thomas Rietveld
63501RED

Designed by Gerrit T. Rietveld in 1918 and produced by Cassina since 1973, Red and Blue is a sculptural chair with a pure and rationalist form, that became an authentic Manifesto for Neoplasticism, embraced by the Dutch De Stijl movement in 1917. This style that was also encouraged by Piet Mondrian whose objective was to seek out the essential nature of things the harmonious equivalence of colour and the use of right-angles. Rietveld produced his first prototypes in 1918, expressing his philosophy of organising space using the same colours for similar components. He later differentiated colour to separate constructional elements according to their function, resulting in a frame with coloured surfaces. As a consequence, the name of the piece changed, from Slat Chair to Red and Blue.
