Nike Inverts Its Recognizable Dunk Low “University Red” for Summer 2021

For Summer 2021, Nike has inverted its popular “St. John’s” colorway — part of the original Dunk pack — to make way for the Dunk Low “University Red”.

With the release referencing a true great from the silhouette’s long and storied lineage, it is interesting to see how simply inverting the original colors has created a considerably more light and contemporary look. This technique is however not uncommon for Nike, with many of its Retro releases employing a similar tactic to refresh its legacy items.

The release’s red leather base is muted by white leather overlays and a coordinated tooling system. With branding reserved to its lateral edge and heel tab, the Nike Dunk Low “University Red” is interesting in that it balances subtlety with the poppier hallmarks commonly associated to the design.
